Not-Back-to-School Picnic!

August 25th, 2008 by Freehold2

Here is the official announcement from the Montreal Homelearners. If you know of any homeschooling families who would like to attend, please invite them!

September can be a rough time for homeschooling families, especially if they feel they are the only ones not going back to school.  That is why the Montreal Homelearners are organizing the biggest not-back-to- school picnic we can : ) on Friday September 5th starting at 12 noon.  We hope that many homeschoolers will turn out, in all our different methods and styles, to meet other homeschoolers.

We have changed the location (it was Westmount park) to Beaver Lake (or Lac aux Castors) on the mountain.  This park has the lake, a playground (currently under construction) , a few picnic areas, and the chalet: an indoor option in case of rain, and a place where you can buy some food or use the washroom.  You can find a map here: http://tinyurl. com/5t7tgw

To get there by public transit, you can take the bus #11 from Mont-Royal metro.  If you come by car, there are a couple of parking lots nearby.

We are planning to have a few games and activities, including a musical parade.  Please bring along any musical instruments you are willing to share (and perhaps put your name on it).  And at 4:30, we have organized a commuter race: a race between a car, a bike and a person on public transit.

***

Stem Cell Transplant Colouring Book

August 19th, 2008 by Freehold2

Recommended reading by Emru Townsend, who is approaching his own stem cell transplant date in the near future. This free download is a colouring and activity book for kids that looks at what happens to a pediatric stem cell recipient in the hospital. This would also be an excellent resource for kids who have a family member in need of a stem cell transplant, or for friends and classmates. Or use it as part of a broader discussion on health.

Domo Shihan

August 13th, 2008 by Freehold2

Some time ago I spoke a bit about writing and why I write. There are those of us who write because we don’t easily think of things to say when we are face to face with people. It is always afterwards, sitting down with a pad and pencil in hand, or in front of the computer screen with a cup of hot tea at my side that I formulate the things I really want to say to people. The clever retorts to friendly teasing or to the rude woman at the grocery store, but also the heartfelt expressions of love or gratitude to people who mean a great deal to me.

I am a writer because I am driven to write and, as my husband was heard to say earlier this evening, I write not to earn praise or to say things I know others want to hear. I write to say things that simply must be said. There are better writers than I, and certainly those who are more disciplined in their writing. There are many times when I know that I fall short of communicating the thing I want my readers to understand, but I continue to write and I continue to perfect the craft of writing.

I was told tonight that someone I respect had popped into the Freehold recently, and that he was touched by some of the things I have written. As I said before I don’t set out to please; I just write what I feel. I can only hope that when I am expressing those sentiments of gratitude, of love, or of respect, that the message gets across to people who need to hear it. This time it did, and I feel most honoured to know that you were moved by what I wrote.

Many thanks to Charlie & Christine for the compliments, but also for your interest and your trust in my skills as a writer. Domo arigato gozaimasu.

Mini Me Geology

My Mom sent me this video from Mini Me Geology. If anyone was wondering about their kits, this gives you a good idea of what you get when you order them.
