Easter Cookie Recipe

March 26th, 2008 by Ruby3881

I’m a little late on this, but I just discovered the recipe and simply had to tell you about it! The folks at Hayes Happenings have posted a simply wonderful Resurrection Cookie Recipe. Make these the night before Easter, and let them bake in an oven you’ve preheated then turned off. It’s a wonderful family tradition that will help your kids better understand the meaning behind Easter.

Enjoy!

Easter Ramblings

March 20th, 2008 by Ruby3881

So, I woke up at 6am and it seems my plans for pretty much the rest of this month were drastically altered. First, school was cancelled for my son. This means one more day to his Easter vacation, and one less day for us to do all the things that are difficult to do when he is home. We had started spring cleaning yesterday, and had planned to get a couple of good hours done today. We had also planned to do our grocery shopping, in light of the fact that we would be pretty much housebound for the next five - now six - days.

Now that plan is out the window.

We’ll manage. Hubby’s favourite mantra is “adapt, improvise, overcome.” And we always figure something out. But I was looking forward to doing the grocery shopping with hubby and the girls. I actually enjoy doing the groceries. I like to take my time, discuss the meals we’re going to make, stroll up and down the aisles with my man while the kids chatter and point out all the cool treats they know we aren’t going to buy - just on the off chance we might get just one of the sugar laden packages of empty calories and future dentist bills….

So I guess this time hubby will be shopping solo. Bummer, but it’s a lot less of a hassle than bringing four kids shopping and having one of them decide he’s going to practice his sprinting and obstacle course skills in the frozen foods section.

The other surprise of the day is that overnight there was a fire in the recycling plant we had planned to visit at the end of this month. It was an activity planned through our local homeschoolers group, so I imagine we’ll have news about the event in the next few days. I’m sure they will still be able to offer tours through the rest of the facilities in the complex, but they probably will have to delay group tours for a while. So, we may have to delay for a while……

Anyway, welcome to spring! It always seems this is the season that throws the most curve balls at us. So - not to mix too many sports metaphors, but - I guess we’re par for the course right now.

Easter weekend is going to be interesting…….

CurrClick Freebies and Discounts

March 20th, 2008 by Ruby3881

I just wanted to say that, true to their promise, the CurrClick web site is chock full of Easter Eggs! I was able to find all seven free e-books, and did see a good many super savings on other products.

I used one of my discount coupons to save on the History of Ancient Times collection from NotebookingPages.com - which was already 40% discounted! This is six sets of notebooking pages for you to use over and over, with some lovely images that kids can colour while they are writing up what they have learned about ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the early Christians, China, Japan, the first peoples of the Americas.

If you need to keep a learning portfolio for your child’s home studies, notebooking is a fabulous option. Instead of giving your child worksheets simply print out the notebooking page(s) that correspond to what you are studying and allow your child to use them creatively. Write narrations on the lines provided, or draw pictures in the empty spaces. Children can also paste in photos, graphs, diagrams, maps, etc. printed from the internet or copied from books. The notebook is like a scrapbook of your child’s learning experiences, and will help him to discuss what he has been studying if oral presentations or interviews are required.

While the notebooking pages are not a study unit, using Debra Fogelbach’s notebooking templates can give you a ton of ideas for topics to explore! She includes well over twenty different ancient peoples and geographical areas in this one collection. There are historical figures, and even pages for the seven wonders of the ancient world.

If you’re not a notebooking fan, there are so many other choices on special right now at CurrClick! Remember that some titles are up to 75% off. There are lapbooking templates, unit studies, reading units, Bible study, math workbooks, art books, preschool materials, parent support materials, help for special needs children…… Oh, I simply can’t tell you everything you’ll find! I’m a frequent visitor to the site and I’m still discovering new treasures :)
Take advantage of the Easter specials until Sunday, 23 March 2008. Quality homeschool materials are just a CurrClick away!

Lester B Pearson Closings

March 20th, 2008 by Ruby3881

The rain we’ve had on top of accumulated snow has caused Quebec’s largest English language school board to close all its facilities 20 March, 2008. This makes for a 6-day weekend for children who were about to be off for the Easter break & Tuesday’s pedagogical day. Here’s the announcement from the board’s web site:

*****

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES IN EFFECT
MARCH 19, 2008
All schools, centres and the head office of the Lester B. Pearson School Board will be closed Thursday, March 20, 2008.
Precautionary measures are in effect due to concerns raised by the board’s Equipment Services Department about changes to the situation regarding the accumulation of snow on roofs due to current weather conditions. The professional engineering staff of Equipment Services, informed the Administration and Council of Commissioners of the department’s recommendation during the evening of Wednesday, March 19th.

Although the current snow and rainfall has not been large, the risk has increased due to changes in the density of the remaining snow and therefore the load on all roofs has increased.

Professional roofing contractors have been removing snow from roofs as early as Wednesday, March 12th. The board placed their contractors on retainer when an earlier assessment of the upcoming weather conditions changed the current situation.

Work will be ongoing throughout the long weekend, weather permitting, and a decision to re-open the schools will be made during that time.

Where the safety of students and staff is in question, the school board’s decision to continue the work and carry out further inspections while its buildings are vacant is strongly felt to be the best course of action.
