Spelling Bee
January 9th, 2008 by Ruby3881Here’s the latest info on the upcoming homeschoolers’ spelling bee. As mentioned below, this bee is registered with the CanWest CanSpell 2008 National Spelling Bee. Participants can qualify for the Regional Bee, and eventually the Nationals in Ottawa, if they do well enough. National bee contestants also go to Washington, DC to participate in Spell-It! 2008, if I understood correctly.
All Montreal area homeschooling families are welcome to participate.
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008
at the Montreal Free School/ M.U.C.S. space
2000 Northcliffe ave. near de Maisonneuve
almost right across from Vendome metro. There will be 3 interconnected spelling bees to accommodate the skill
levels of all the interested participants:
beginners (grade 1-2 level), intermediate and “whipper-snapper”!All spelling bees are open to all ages, but if you are too good you will
be bumped up to the next level. The last, advance bee will be the official “school bee” qualifier for
the CanWest spelling bee.We will start at 10 am and go on till 2 pm so bring a lunch.
Depending on how many people show up, a donation of $1-2 per family for
the space would be appreciatedLet me know if you will be coming, so I can organize the day better.
You’ll probably find things are better organized if you give Lalie the names/levels of your kids, so she knows how many at each level to expect. You can reach her at lalie.douglas@sympatico.ca
Spelling activities, rules for the bee and other goodies can be had free online, at the CanSpell web site and also the American Spell-It! site.
The Montreal Gazette is a sponsor of the spelling bee, and will print the names of the Regional Finalists in the 8 February, 2008 issue of the paper. Another date to keep in mind is 24 February, 2008. On this date the Regional Bee will be held at McGill University (no time or room number yet.) More details will be posted here, as they become available.
