Reminder: Parents’ Meeting Friday

January 6th, 2008 by Ruby3881

Montreal area homeschoolers, remember that this coming Friday evening is your opportunity to get together with your peers! There will be a meeting for grown-ups (breastfeeding infants welcome) at Sonya’s home. The topic is curriculum, so bring your favourite curricula to share with others - or bring questions about selecting curricula!

See this post for the details. All are welcome!

Why I Write

January 6th, 2008 by Ruby3881

My parents always encouraged me in my writing. My husband picks up a lot of slack around the house, so I can carry on this obsession of mine. People sometimes tell me that I’ve got a way with words, or that it must come easy to me.

No, in fact, it doesn’t come easy. I’d say more, but this piece by Secular Homeschooling editor Deborah Markus tells it better than I could hope to. Deborah produces the kind of writing I wish I could claim as my own. Please stop by her blog and read the complete entry.

And if you’re ever moved to leave a little note when you encounter a writer whose work you appreciate, don’t be shy! Trust me, and Deborah: your words of encouragement are always treasured.

I think about something clever I could say, and then I remember that I don’t have cleverness on tap nearly as often as I wish I did (that’s why I’m a writer, where you get to write and delete and stare into space until everything’s just how you want it, as opposed to, say, a stand-up comedian, where your wit is constantly taking a pass-or-fail exam)….

Many folks have a “why we homeschool” entry in their blogs. Consider this post my “why I write” entry.
