New Religion & Ethics Course in Quebec
December 21st, 2007 by Ruby3881If you followed the link in my sidebar over the last week or so, you’ll have had the chance to take part in the weekly poll for the Bouchard-Taylor Commission on reasonable accommodation. There is now a new Question of the Week, as follows:
Do you agree with the following statement? “It is timely that the Québec government introduce in September 2008 a new ethics and religious culture course intended to heighten awareness among young Quebecers of the growing ethnoreligious diversity in our society.”
When I went to vote, the results were: 68% disagree; 5% agree; 26% entirely agree (0% more or less agree.) Although this is not a scientific poll, you might want to let the Quebec government know how you feel on the subject.
In the home-school community there has been discussion of this new course because many feel that, once the course is in place in the public school system, home educators will also be asked to provide this kind of teaching to their children. Some feel this is a threat to their freedom of religion, while others believe it is a good thing to introduce children of all faiths to a broad diversity of belief systems.
Wondering what this new course is all about? You can find documentation here (scroll down - English downloads are indicated “anglaise”.)
How do you feel about the new course? I’d love you to share by leaving a comment here!
